Backgrounding/foregrounding white supremacy

From an AP story on the inaguaration:

Of course it was anything but — a run-up, in fact, to the first inauguration of an African-American president in a nation founded by slave-owners.

Please note how it’s not explicitly stated that the slaves in question were – for the most part – from Africa.  Instead, it’s assumed knowledge, or implicit given the first half of the sentence.

This sentence is one more example of what it’s like to live in a white supremacist society.
