The World as Seen by the Major Media

Nice essay from Jay Rosen.  This bit, which he reprinted, is key:


Basically, the inner sphere contains things the national press all agree (‘Americans are a force for good in the world.’).  The outer sphere contains those things the national press sees as areas of legitimate debate (and therefore thinks that everyone else also sees them as areas of legitimate debate).  The area outside the sphere?  Forget it.  The other key bit is that the press doesn’t do this consciously.
