Guns! (cue trolls)

The DH is alive with trolls these days, mostly in regards to the recent news about the proposed change in whether or not concealed weapons permits are public information.  There are lots and lost of people throwing a really big hissy fit over this fact.  For example:

Likewise, it could be argued that if lists of gun permit holders were publicly available to anyone who asked, the lists could become useful to thieves and other criminals.

Here’s the thing.  Up until now, that information was considered public information, and guess what?  No one cared.  Criminals did not file dozens of requests and then rob the houses of people without guns (or steal guns from those who had them).  This is not and has never been a problem.  Stop freaking out about it, people.

What’s that you say?  That particular bit of hissy fit was Hering?  He failed to do any research whatsoever before advancing a hypothetical argument that happens to bear no resemblance to reality?  Somehow it made it into the newspaper? Color me shocked.

I’m not going to delve into the cesspool of comments this issue is generated, except to say this:  Whoever blamed this on Obama in a comment on this story – and was apparently serious – is so far beyond woefully misinformed it scares me a little.

Oh, and this:  Of course this information should be publicly available.  But then again, I also believe guns are generally stupid and useless and that people would just be far better off if they lost that creepy Wayne LaPierre socialization, grew the fuck up and got over the stupid, deadly metal substitute for a dick and/or brain.  (I say this having once had a family member pull up his shirt at a family reunion in the ‘burbs and label his formerly concealed handgun his right to vote, as if he was going to gun down the first poll worker who dared to stand in his way.)

Commence flaming.

I would think that the criminals would request the information to know which houses to avoid.

Also, not intended as a flame, but some of your readers own guns and keep them concealed at family reunions, don’t care to discuss them as political enforcement tools, but rather enjoy the right to have and use them.

I’m fairly certain no criminal is going to leave my house with my guns because they are all locked up when I’m not using them. The safe weighs in just over 680 lbs, and the contents add a couple hundred more. I think most folks would call that responsible gun ownership in practice. What’s wrong with it?

I did find your “I also believe guns are generally stupid and useless and that people would just be far better off if they lost that creepy Wayne LaPierre socialization, grew the fuck up and got over the stupid, deadly metal substitute for a dick and/or brain.” a little over the top, but as usual, I acknowledge it as your opinion. Just wish you would take it easy on some of us who can loosely be associated to the weirdos you are referring to (this issue and others), even though I don’t think I’m quite the type you are “targeting”… (or hope not anyway.)

    Cheers!
