This is why the Republican Party is disgusting

From the Miami Herald:

An ACORN community organizer received a death threat and the liberal-leaning voter registration group’s Boston and Seattle offices were vandalized Thursday, reflecting mounting tensions over its role in registering 1.3 million mostly poor and minority Americans to vote next month… Republicans, including presidential candidate John McCain, have verbally attacked the group repeatedly in recent days, alleging a widespread vote-fraud scheme, although they’ve provided little proof….

From Democracy Now!

WV Voting Machines Switch Votes from Obama to McCain

McCain Supporters Harass Obama Voters in North Carolina… In Fayetteville, a group of John McCain supporters heckled and harassed a group of mostly black supporters of Barack Obama as they voted on Sunday… The website Facing South reports the McCain supporters likely broke the Voting Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits anyone from intimidating or threatening a person for voting or attempting to vote.

The Republican Party has filed numerous legal challenges questioning the status of about 200,000 newly registered voters in Ohio, warning about the potential for voter fraud.

From OpEdNews:

Republican congressman Robin Hayes of North Carolina told a crowd of McCain supporters at a rally in Concord NC on Saturday that “liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God.” While Hayes initially denied saying this, he was forced to admit the truth when confronted with audio of these very words in his own voice.

Chicago Breaking News:

A 74-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man with Obama signs in their front yards near the 600 block of South Villa Avenue (map) received similar letters that had a Villa Park Village Hall return address. “Get the Obama signs off your property — now,” the letter reads. “Failure to obey this order will result in the immediate death of all family members.”

Tampa Bay Online:

Al Austin, a veteran, high-level Republican fundraiser from Tampa, today sent an email to his list of his political contacts containing a joke that refers to the assassination of Barack Obama… The joke concerns a group of school children discussing the definition of “tragedy,” as opposed to “great loss” or “accident.” The punch line comes when one child says that if an airplane carrying Obama and his wife, Michelle, “was struck by a ‘friendly fire’ missile and blown to smithereens,” the event might be a tragedy, “because it certainly wouldn’t be a great loss, and it probably wouldn’t be an accident either.”

U.S. Representative Michelle Bachmann, (R-Minn.):

Appearing on MSNBC’s Hardball today, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) attacked the patriotism of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL)… “I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views,” said Bachmann… She then went further, suggesting that all liberal views — held by people such as Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, professors, and all Americans who identify themselves as “liberals” — are “anti-American”… Bachmann called on the media to conduct investigations into the anti-American activities of members of Congress…

Bachmann two days later:

BACHMANN: I feel his views are concerning. I’m calling on the media to investigate them. I’m not saying that his views are anti-American. That was a misreading of what I said. And so I don’t believe that’s my position. I’m calling on the media to take a look at what his views are.

From Bradblog, a press release from the Ohio Secretary of State’s office:

The website of the Ohio Secretary of State is being set to “static mode” following a recent series of “security breach” attempts… Unfortunately, this is not the first instance of direct assault on the operations of the Secretary of State’s office. In recent weeks, phone lines and e-mail channels have been barraged, even in the business filings section of the office, with menacing messages and even threats of harm or death. Last week, a suspicious package covered with threatening messages and containing an unidentified powder was mailed to the Secretary of State’s office via the previous location of the Client Services Center. These incidents are also under investigation.

This is a case where I see correlation and causation on a large scale.

Oh, and then there’s this.

Sorry Dennis, I don’t care how the Dem claimed to have registered more voters at the end McCain is going to win.

Kinda one sided reporting, man. I know it is your living room and all… Now do google news searches for Democrats harassing republicans and you’ll find the same thing. It is all disgusting, and does not bode well for our society. Both parties are FUBAR and disgust me. Usually it is at least entertaining, but not this time. Just disgusting.

We have so many things wrong with this country, and they don’t even talk about it. At least the whole election doesn’t involve Vietnam. Some 40 years later, we have dropped it. So, if that holds true, we will stop voting based on Iraq war votes in 2048. How about medicare/medicaid? What about the fricking lack of infrastructure? Power grids that suck. We want to be more like Europe? So bring on the nuclear power. We spend boatloads of money on the war on drugs. Money wasted. Abstinence? Money wasted. Give ’em all depo shots starting in junior high. I need to pass a drug test to work? Pass a drug test to get welfare. 700 billion dollars and counting and we can’t even figure out what happened with the economy? I’ll tell you what happened, we can’t stop spending money we don’t have. Has EITHER candidate said they’ll cut spending? Well, McCain has, but I don’t believe it. Bush said the same thing. Why the hell do we have hundreds of military bases across the world? Money wasted. Why is the retirement age not rising? We live 25 years longer than we use to, and the retirement age went up like, what, 6 years? most 65 year olds don’t need social security, they need a job. More money wasted.

And for heavens sake, close the borders before all the people who know how to work leave and go back to their own countries.

Oh, and the death penalty needs to go to the schmucks who bring meth into our communities. Marijuana? that’s ok as long as you are not flying the plane.

Anti-American: buying all of our oil from other countries to go to work to get money to send to China for more crap we don’t need.

    I’m done.

    Dennis,

So, the Repubs are over the line and you “see correlation and causation on a large scale” yet when a School board member’s house is egged, there can be no connection to CARES. However, knowing the kids of some CARES members/supporters (read: Paid petitioners), I know it very well could have been a CARES associate.

Anyhow, watching two Republican factions fight it out in Lebanon has been informative. You have the JR/Karl Rove style system Repub vs. the “I’m ah commoner, w’th common sense, and I don’t need no Roberts rules n’order interferring wid my free speech here in Lebnun” types represented by Rick and (now) the blood in the water ‘proofers.’

Frankly, both groups (LT and LP represent) seem to be killing education in Lebanon.

Let us hope (dare we?) that the f***ing crazies on the right do not, I repeat, do not ‘kill’ anyone. Even though they may be raging with the ‘feverish’ visions and insane ‘pattern creation’ (see this: Dennis, http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/10/02/mind-control-pattern.html), it is time to take some common sense medicine and realize that lies and obfuscation can only drive the cattle so far before they head off a cliff…

It’s not that there can’t possibly be a connection, it is that there is no evidence supporting a connection. Compare that to John McCain accusing ACORN of destroying the fabric of democracy and a few days later seeing ACORN offices get vandalized and death threats made against their staff with CARES is ludicrous. CARES’ whole platform is based on following the law. They condemned the egging.

It is possible that whoever egged the house was or is Pro-Robinson, but that doesn’t make them connected to CARES. Saying otherwise is pretty darn close to libel unless you can prove it. In the same way that not everyone who opposed Robinson agreed on everything or even worked together, not everyone who supported Robinson (or opposes Alexander and Wineteer) works together or even talks to each other. Can we please stop tarring whole sections of the community with such a broad brush?

Now do google news searches for Democrats harassing republicans and you’ll find the same thing.

That’s the point. I don’t find those results. Go ahead – look under Google News for “democrats harassing Republicans.” Most of the results are examples of Republicans harassing Democrats! And more to the point, mixed in those links above are examples of Republican officials saying and doing these things, like McCain and Rep. Michelle Bachmann. It’s not someone from the fringe of the party; it’s the party faithful. When is the last time you heard a Democrat imply that a Republican is anti-American, or that Northern Virginia is communist country? Northern Virginia.

Look, I don’t think the Democratic Party is that great, for a whole host of reasons (too enslaved to corporate money, not liberal enough, not courageous enough in defending their beliefs, still way to Eurocentric, etc). But there’s no equivalence between what the Dems are doing and what the Repubs are doing. There’s just not. Claiming otherwise as justification for remaining apathetic, or burying one’s head in the sand, or feeling justified that “your” party contains people who are doing such stupid things – well, it’s based on an empirically false belief. It’s factually incorrect. There is no equivalence. An example of equivalence would be major Democratic Party officials suggesting that McCain is unqualified because he’s probably crazy from all the torture. That doesn’t happen – in fact, the only person I’ve ever heard say that is a staunch Republican family member of mine.

  5. Just guessing Says:

    Dennis,

You are correct in you reply- but as I signed ‘Just guessing’ and was playing the foil, I appreciate your reply.

And I love this: (because it is soooo true)
“But there’s no equivalence between what the Dems are doing and what the Repubs are doing. There’s just not. And in reply to ‘the one’, first I was told I am the one (just needed to get that out of the way :), so expect a letter from my archangel soon, I have searched for example of Democratic violence and …., nada. Sorry, but the radical left is dead right now. Perhaps this is why Obama is leading by an average of 7.2% on http://www.realclearpolitics.com/ as of today.
I can easily agree that the two party system is a SNAFU or FUBAR… Perhaps Preference Voting would help, but it is a hard sell in a RED/BLUE universe created by right wing think tanks of the last 30+ years. How about selling/buying Peace, Sacred Sex, End the Drug War, Pay as we go, and a 40 to 1 ratio between the lowest pay in society and the highest?, and the end of work as we know it- not some stupid proposal to work until we die….

Just a butterfly to hurricane bit of dream

Pushed to meet daily quotas and bullied by bosses if they didn’t, Ohio ACORN workers faked voter registrations, signed up people more than once, and even paid off registrants to keep from being fired, its canvassers told The Post

    Philadelphia:Oct 15th.
CNN: According to city officials, close to 8,000 applications turned in by ACORN are problematic, including the 1,500 already sent to the U.S. Attorney, and officials expect the number to climb. Greg Voigt says so far his office is catching them, making sure no bad registrations lead to bad votes, but admits he has limited staff.

In Lake County, Indiana, ACORN turned in 5,000 new registrations. The authorities there started reviewing them, and quit after they found that the first 2,100 were all fraudulent. The mind boggles: ACORN turns in thousands of new registrations, and not a single one represents a legitimate voter. Here is CNN’s report:

McCain Supporter Attacked on East Side Last Month
Politico’s Ben Smith got confirmation from the Manhattan DA’s office about an incident last month where a female McCain supporter was assaulted at Lexington Avenue and 51st Street. According to conservative blog The Silent Majority, a man–without provocation–grabbed the woman’s McCain sign, ripped it up, and hit her with it, bruising her face. The victim followed him into the 6 train subway station and found police officers on the platform; she added that he was only arrested after she showed the cops her bruised face. The assailant allegedly said, “I don’t know why I did this. It’s just those signs, and this election, it has me so upset.” Smith reports that the man, Bernard Feuerman, was charged with second degree assault and has a January 23 court date

  7. rhetoricalwasteland Says:

    “York county republican office vandalized”

Yes, it’s stupid stuff, but I see no connection to the Democratic party, nor to anything Obama or Biden has said.

    ACORN

Here’s the thing. ACORN pays people to register voters. Those people are not always honest or scrupulous. However – listen closely – ACORN is required by law to turn in all registration forms, even the ones they think are fake. In fact, ACORN cooperates with authorities when it comes to fake registrations; it’s clearly in their best interest.

Furthermore, there is no evidence that a) large numbers of fake registrations are getting past registration boards, or b) someone is going to try and vote 73 times.

Basically, the entire ACORN thing is a trumped-up scandal, designed to delegitimize the votes of poor and minority people (who are the people ACORN focuses on registering). And again, it’s not connected to the Democratic Party.

“Brick Thrown Through Window Had Anarchy Symbol”

Anarchists hate the Democratic Party. Again, while it is anti-Republican violence, it’s not related to the Democratic Party or its candidates.

“McCain Supporter Attacked on East Side Last Month”

This looks legit, though I still fail to see any connection to anything Obama or Biden has said.

    “More Bogus Obama Donors Surface”

If you had read the article, you might have noticed that the campaign was returning almost all of the donations.

“McCain Supporter Attacked by Obama Supporters for Holding Obama Sign & Wearing Saudi Arabian Black Dress”

Again, if you watched the clip, it’s clear this was a stunt on the part of the McCain supporter. It doesn’t justify the stupid behavior on the part of others, but there’s more to the story.

Congratulations. You’ve found a nonstory – ACORN (voter registration fraud and voting fraud are two very different things; the first almost never leads to the second) – and a few stories of isolated violence with no apparent connection to Obama. I’m happy to condemn the latter, but my original points – that there is no equivalence between Ds and Rs regarding what is happening, and that there is a connection between the rhetoric of McCain, Palin and major Republicans and things like vandalizing ACORN – still stand. You’ve got to do better than that; look at the actual evidence, rather than assume an equivalency or connection.

I bring up statements by a U.S. Representative and death threats, and you think bad graffiti is equivalent? Seriously?

P.S. Murtha said this in the article you note:

“What I said, that indicted everybody, that’s not what I meant at all. What I mean is there’s still folks that have a problem voting for someone because they are black,” Murtha said.

He’s clearly painting with too broad a brush, but there are people in Pennsylvania who have told pollsters they won’t vote for Obama because he’s black. Murtha’s comment is not without some basis in truth, even if it’s not right.

    Sheesh.

  8. rhetoricalwasteland Says:

    Oh, hell.

Check out McCain attempting to riff on the Murtha comment referenced above.

    Oops.

  9. No thanks Says:

For the past several months, about half a dozen homes in Lebanon a month have been egged, with no apparent connection between them.
